The Marcus Garvey Institute for Human Development (MGI) and the Center for Global Africa have launched the Garvey Legacy Campaign, a movement dedicated to exonerating Marcus Garvey, the influential Pan-African leader. This initiative is fueled by growing support for Garvey’s posthumous pardon and aims to rectify the historic injustice he faced when wrongfully convicted by the U.S. government. Central to the campaign is the newly released book, Justice for Marcus Garvey: Look for Me in the Whirlwind (Broadleaf Books), edited by Garvey’s son, Dr. Julius Garvey. The book, featuring contributions from notable figures like Ta-Nehisi Coates and Maulana Karenga, explores Garvey’s enduring impact on social justice movements.
Additionally, the campaign will be highlighted by the release of The Garvey Legacy Film, a short documentary that tells the story of the ongoing exoneration efforts led by activists, legal experts, and community leaders, with particular emphasis on support from Delaware leaders. The film is set to debut on December 26, 2024.
A faith-based forum to officially kick off the campaign will take place on December 9, 2024, at Bethel AME Church in Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Julius Garvey and Professor Ezrah Aharone, both instrumental in the campaign, will also embark on a speaking tour in 2025 to further advocate for Garvey’s pardon. The campaign underscores the broader need for reparative justice for Garvey’s persecution and the ongoing importance of his legacy in shaping Black pride and self-determination.
